PR Companies Who Spam Bloggers

Matt Haughey is right--the only way bloggers can stop constant press releases is to simply filter messages based on a company's domain name.  Why? Because even when you ask one employee of a PR firm to remove you from their list, others still spam you. Case in point:

In the spirit of sharing, here's a current list of PR companies who have sent me unsolicited (and almost always irrelevant) product pitches.  Please add your own.

To filter any mail from anyone in these companies in Gmail, create a new Filter.  In the From: field, enter the domain names separated by the OR operator, or |, like this:

From: *@bigmouthpr.com | *@consortpartners.com

Here's the (initial) list above in Gmail filter format. Copy and paste this into your From: field in your new PR-killing filter.

NOTE: This wiki was put together by Gina Trapani, editor of Lifehacker.com, who welcomes blog pitches to the tips at lifehacker.com email address, which exists for that purpose.  She has always respectfully requested that no press releases get sent to her personal email address in the one place where it is published online.  Her direct email address at Lifehacker is not published anywhere online. The press releases, however, keep arriving.  At her personal and/or direct email address. Which is why she filters these companies.

MUSIC PUBLICIST FILTER

(from Paul Irish of Aurgasm):

This is big so I usually break it up into a couple filters.. They look like this in gmail.

The brace format is a more compact way instead of using pipes (like | ) as Gina did above.

UPDATES AND FOLLOW UPS

May 11 2008:  Matt writes some great advice, from the perspective of a heavily-pitched blogger, on how to do it right.

May 12 2008:  Someone with access to it points out that my name and personal email address is in the Cision database, "the industry's premier source of media contact info,"  even though I NEVER opted my direct email addresses into such a thing, and under any circumstances, never would.  Two other bloggers tell me that they, too, are on the Cision list without their knowledge or consent.

May 13 2008: When I emailed Cision and asked that they remove my personal email address from their database, and replace it with the tips at lifehacker.com address, they responded promptly and did just that.  When I asked how my information got into their database, they said:

"Typically, if we are unable to initially verify information directly with a journalist, we will also use publicly available information from the Internet. HOWEVER, I apologize for your personal email address being listed. You had a clear statement requesting that no pitches be sent to that email address on your personal website.

Unfortunately, we don't keep a history of which of our research editors create which listings. We have spoken with our entire team about the importance of ensuring that only the right information is added."

I appreciate this response, but still remain wary of Cision's existing contact list.

If you are getting press releases you don't want, you may be in the Cision media contact database. Email changes@us.cision.com to inquire.

Dozens of people have written empassioned posts to their own blogs about this wiki.  I'm very happy to see this conversation happening. Some bloggers have asked me to respond to their accusations/observations/questions in the comments of each post.  If I had the time, I would be happy to do this, but in all honesty, I barely have time to keep up with the comments on my own blog.  I know the "too busy" excuse smacks of self-importance, but this is what this whole issue is about:  choosing what you spend your time on.  I choose not to spend it weeding my inbox every day.

Thanks to everyone who has written about this issue.  I look forward to the conversation effecting change.
